Boxing & MMA Gym Design Layouts - All You Need to Know [With Examples]

By Blake Jones

The design and layout of a gym directly affects its success. It sends out a message to your members and it's up to you to decide what message you want to convey. So what sets apart a Boxing or MMA gym from a regular fitness gym? Design layout and the placement of equipment.

Boxing and MMA gyms are very similar looking, the major difference, other than the equipment, is that MMA gyms are a bit more precisely detailed and require separate areas with mats for practicing.

How does the design layout affect your brand identity?

Your gym's interior will have a major effect on the mood of your members, thus it is very important to consider the design and layout while planning for it. The overall design will define your brand identity and will depend on the the theme, niche, and types of services you will provide. Following are some points you need to consider while designing your gym:

Use natural light sources and mirrors

Natural light is a great way to enhance the overall look and feel of a gym. It boosts the energy and improves the mood of members. It is scientifically proved that utilising daylight also boosts the overall health of members. Natural light also makes your space seem more open and spacious.

Using mirrors in Gyms

Using unique or creative designs on your windows or doors from where the light enters can be a very attractive feature in your gym. Including mirrors on walls is a great way to open up your space and it gives the illusion of having a bigger space.

Natural light paired with mirrors enhances the overall look of your gym. If you are going for a gym design that looks like it is underground you can utilize the windows or skylights and illuminate the gym with them.

Plan the layout wisely

When designing your gym your aim should be to create a space where both function and form combine. You need to wisely plan where which piece of equipment will go and how you can make the space functional without having to clutter up the area. You need to consider the right materials and equipment to provide the right ambience to your members.

If you are considering designing a Boxing or MMA gym, you need to strategically plan and set up your layout. A boxing or MMA gym needs to include a boxing ring, punch bags, boxing gloves, and other equipment necessary for your members to train. For a complete guide on the equipment necessary for an MMA gym, you can check our previous blog, The Ultimate MMA Gym Equipment Checklist [Owner's Guide].

Set the mood by displaying motivating images

Displaying images with encouraging words is a good way to motivate your members and it poses an opportunity for you to make your gym stand out. Displaying such images encourages your members to push their limits. Even the simplest of words such as, “You’ve Got This”, “Push yourself”, or “Who says you can’t” can boost the energy of your members.

To motivate boxing and mma gym members display motivating images

You can use encouraging words or quotes displayed on your walls, windows or doors to motivate your members. It will not only motivate your members but also be considered part of your gym's design. You can display them using either bold colours such as black, blue, red, yellow, or green or by using LED signs.

Provide a Recreational room

After training your members might be tired or exhausted as Boxing or MMA require quite a lot of strength. You can provide your members with a recreational room with different activities to do so that they can refresh their minds and bodies. You can provide an area for meditation, dance or for them to read something.

Set a unique style for your gym

Every gym brand has some sort of uniqueness to them and they are not afraid to show it. You can display your unique style through the design and layout of your gym. You can either have a modern, contemporary or industrial-looking gym. It is not necessary that you stick with a single layout. You can include your own unique touches in it if you want to. The equipment stays the same for every gym, what makes them stand out is how they design their facility and how they customize it according to their brand.

Creating separate gym zones

You can even separate studios according to the type of exercise that can be performed on specific equipment. Such as creating a zone for cardio and another for stretching or for free weights. Creating separate zones gives your members a dedicated place to work out. It also prevents cluttering the gym by moving equipment across the gym. Takeaway

The design or overall interior can either make or break the brand identity of your gym. If you design it according to the services you want to provide and are clear about the perception you want your members to have, you can ensure high member loyalty and ultimately revenue. The design and layout of your gym will also help you distinguish your boxing or MMA gym from competitors.
